Harvest season at Cramele Recas

The harvest season is very much in the process and Cramele Recas believes that 2019 will be a really special year for their wine.

This years’ growing season started with challenging conditions with wet and cool weather interspersed with warm sun and dry periods during March–May 2019. This did not disrupt regular vineyards, however posed some difficulties for organic vineyards as it becomes more difficult for the winemakers to fight wine diseases that may be attracted by the changing weather conditions.

After the beginning of June, the weather changed to very warm and dry, with little rain in the west and north of the country and no rain at all in the south east between June and September.

Due to the warm but not excessively hot weather, between 28-35 °C during June, July, August and the first half of September, absolutely all grape varietals enjoyed perfect ripening conditions, which can be rare.

The dry weather during the harvest allowed optimum ripeness levels of picking – especially in the South-East of Romania, where grapes attained unusually high record ripeness level resulting in excellent quality, especially on Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Merlot grapes.

In the third week of September, the harvesting team harvested nearly all the white grapes and most of the Merlot and Pinot Noir at Recas, starting Feteasca Neagra harvest in the next couple of days.

Feteasca Neagra, producing a deep red-coloured wine with ruby shades, and a black currant flavour, is an indigenous grape to Romania and has become the defining variety for Romanian wines.

As Cramele Recas has recorded positive effects of their work over the last year to further improve the quality of their wines, it seems that 2019 may well be one of the finest seasons so far. We hope to find that out next year!
